We are big fans of the Olympic Games. Bill's experience as a volunteer for the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City is one of the highlights of his life. (If you ever want to hear some great stories, ask him about it. The stories involve Mario LeMieux and Jamie Sale & David Pelletier, among others!)
But as we watched the Opening Ceremony of the Beijing Olympics with our very own Chinese treasure in our lap, our hearts were filled with love, respect and excitement for the people of China. Many feelings filled our hearts as we watched Isabelle watch each segment of the beautiful production.
When we first began the adoption process, we did extensive study about China and its' people. Alhough we found it to be a beautiful country with a rich history, we never expected to feel the love we have now. This seems to be a common bond we have with others who have adopted from China.
As the Olympics have progressed, on blog after blog we have seen people sharing this common bond of excitement and love for the Chinese. People outside the adoption circle seem to look at us oddly and not understand. Even some of us don't quite understand. But it is apparent that many of us did not have any idea we were going to feel this way. That country is a piece of our children. They are Americans now, but what we're seeing during the Olympics telecasts is their heritage; a piece of who they are. Their roots are in China, and as we watch the Olympics taking place in their birth country we can't help but be consumed with a love for the people there. That country allowed us the honor of parenting Isabelle, for which we are forever grateful.
