In China, today is the Moon Festival, or Mid-Autumn Festival. This festival is one of the most important holidays celebrated in China, second only to Chinese New Year. The festival is celebrated on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month of the year. It is a time to celebrate the bountiful harvest and to celebrate family. Traditionally, families celebrate by gathering together and staying up late to have moon gazing parties, light lanterns, and eat a harvest feast that includes moon cakes.
The Alabama chapter of Families with Children from China sponsored an event that allowed families in situations similar to ours to celebrate the holiday and, more importantly, help these little girls learn more about their heritage. Isabelle made her own lantern for the holiday, and even tried some Chinese moon cake. But the highlight for her seemed to be spending some time with little girls who actually looked like her.
